How to create a superbill in SimplePractice

If your practice runs on SimplePractice, superbills are built in. Here is how to create one, what to check when something is missing, and what to use if you're not on SimplePractice.

Steps

According to SimplePractice's help center, the process is:

1. On the client's Overview page, add a diagnosis (New → Diagnosis and treatment plan). Date it on or before the first appointment you want on the superbill.
2. Open the client's Billing page and choose the date range.
3. Click New → Superbill.
4. Tick each date of service to include.
5. Click Create Superbill, then print, download as PDF or email it.

If something is missing

• No diagnosis on the superbill: the diagnosis is dated after the first appointment. Change its date and create the superbill again.
• No NPI: the rendering clinician's individual NPI is pulled from their profile settings. Add it there.
• Sessions not shown as paid: only invoices paid in full count as paid. Partial payments don't.
• Signature line: can be switched on in the document settings, for superbills created afterwards.

Automatic monthly superbills

SimplePractice can generate superbills automatically each month (by default on the 10th, to leave time for payments to clear). The date can be changed in the billing settings.

Not on SimplePractice?
